Parasym: the electrical 'superhighway'

Published on

Parasym

‘Parasym is a neurotechnology company focused on providing innovative neuromodulation products that restore our health. Their mission is to provide a cutting edge and widely effective treatment for a host of health problems linked to the Vagus nerve. I think they have great potential to deliver on this mission given the right funding and support, allowing them to propel research and scale up production and reach.

The Vagus Nerve helps to control everything from our breathing to our immune system. Stimulating it could transform physical and mental health.

Many technologies are seeking to tap into the “electrical superhighway” that is the Vagus nerve to either help improve mental wellbeing e.g. depression and anxiety or to reduce procrastination and improve productivity in the workplace among numerous other health issues.

There is a large market for such products as well; social media is awash with adverts for biohacking, ways to jump start your brain to be more productive and feel better. Search “Vagus nerve hacks" on TikTok and you will be bombarded with examples of these tips. Amazon sells hundreds of similar products, looking to ‘solve’ health problems by tapping into the vagus nerve.

Researchers are skeptical of these quick tips/ hacks, and so it begs the question, which techniques are proven by research and have a measurable level of success?

Parasym is such a company, having created Nurosym, a device that uses bioelectrical signals targeted to neural circuits of organs through an earpiece. They have partnered with leading clinics and academic institutions to conduct research and development for applications of the technology and the results are measurable in patients. For example, patients who received Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation (tVNS) scored significantly lower on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale compared to those who received the sham treatment (device attached to areas without vagus nerve access).

In summary:

  • Nurosym is backed by scientists at major institutions.
  • Nurosym has seen positive results in a number of fields such as depression.
  • Nurosym only has 9 employees and therefore has great room for growth.
  • There is a large market for vagus nerve stimulation technology as 1 in 5 people suffer from mental health disorders among numerous other health conditions
  • Vagus nerve stimulation has the potential to alleviate a significant number of health conditions, e.g.
  • Long-covid/ post-covid fatigue
  • Sjögren’s Syndrome
  • Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (Pots)
  • Obesit
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Arthritis
  • Sepsis
  • Crohn’s Disease

According to Craft, their financials are as follows:

  • Revenue (FY, 2021): €38.0K
  • Gross profit (FY, 2021): €37.7K
  • Net income (FY, 2021): €30.6K

Competitors:

  • Steris USA
  • Shenzen Biotech
  • Advanced Bionic
